After years spent avoiding his problems, Renn Wheeland (Nick Jonas) is forced to face his greatest fear: the recent death of his mother, Lily (Elisabeth Shue). While traveling home for her funeral, Renn meets Zoey (Alexandra Shipp), who provides the perfect excuse to avoid facing his new reality. Once home, Renn's greeted by his eager-to-connect father, Darren (Matt Walsh) and over-bearing sister, Leigh (Brittany Snow). Renn and Leigh have a complicated relationship, one which will make the next few days difficult, as memories of the past begin flooding back. And saying goodbye to their mother has an added wrinkle because Renn and Leigh are not alone, they're joined by their stepfather, Rick (David Arquette), whose relationship with Renn is anything but magical. And Rick's vision of a funeral is clearly not aligned with Renn's: Renn wants a cremation; Rick bought a casket. Renn wants a family member to deliver the eulogy; Rick's asked a hoarder Priest. And as the grieving process gets harder and harder, Renn's need for escape increases, resulting in a blossoming friendship with Zoey. Eventually, Renn finds the courage to stand up at Lily's funeral and share a memory about his mother, one that confronts the loss he's been avoiding. In the end, he's created a new relationship with Leigh, one forged out of grief. He's connected with Darren, found closure with Rick, and built a new friendship with Zoey. After that, there's really only one thing left for Renn to do: begin the process of healing.
