A blend of documentary, concert film & urban fairy tale, Downtown '81 stars Jean-Michel Basquiat (in his only film role) as an artist wandering the streets of 1980s New York, attempting to sell his work and find a place to stay. Featuring appearances by Debbie Harry, Fab Five Freddy, Glenn\ O'Brien, Amos Poe, Cookie Mueller, Roberta Bayley, Tav Falco & Maripol, with music by James White and the Blacks, Kid Creole and the Coconuts, Tuxedomoon and DNA, Downtown '81 is a snapshot of a crucial period in time: a city in financial decline and an explosion of creative freedom.
Roberta Bayley, iconic photographer of the Downtown NYC scene, will be the featured special guest at the screening.
