About SEASON TO RISK:
This pioneering Kansas City band has survived fire, flood, tornadoes, and van crashes and lived to talk about it.
Season to Risk play a genre-bending mix of heavy indie rock. Singer Steve Tulipana’s captivating stage presence quickly got the band noticed in the early 90s and signed to Columbia (Sony), with vocals in the lineage of Nick Cave and David Yow of Jesus Lizard. The band changed direction with each release, quickly pivoting away from the grunge and nu metal wave, showing a surprisingly diverse range of influences and interests, gradually adding darker noise and synthesizer. Reviews ranged from “the next Soundgarden” (1st record) to “metal for recovering indie rockers” (2nd record).
In 1993, they were selected to perform as a futuristic punk band for the club scene in the film “Strange Days” about the Y2K apocalypse, but their song was cut from the soundtrack for being “too noisy”.Legendary noise rock pioneers Season to Risk return with new full-length album 1-800-MELTDOWN, fittingly titled for the chaos of 2025. The new single, track 1 “Echo Chamber” describes the bot-farm propaganda machine that got us into this mess. This indie rock band has experienced it all: years of constant touring, major label ups and downs, master tapes destroyed by flood and fire, and yet they continue to release ground-breaking heavy music. The band’s crushing line up since the late 90s is Steve Tulipana (vocal), Duane Trower (guitar, synth), David Silver (drums, metal), Billy Smith (bass, keys), Wade Williamson (guitar, synth).

Teetering from melodic harmonies to insane driving noise, the record compiles fresh new tracks with unreleased songs, including guest performances by other Kansas City based musicians, and the music from their industrial punk scene in the end-of-the-world film “Strange Days”.

Led by vocalist/guitarist Sammy McKee, you can hear the mid-90’s alt oozing out of your headphones, but with enough forward momentum and nods to more angular work woven throughout to keep things not just interesting, but oftentimes arresting. McKee’s vocals oscillate between speaking voice volume and searing screams as the EP progresses, with an interesting 2-minute interlude that follows the first two tracks before bleeding into the EPs final eponymous track, an unabashedly angry and discordant end to a distressingly brief set of songs. Drummer Dave Cupp (also of Siren Suit) doesn’t hold back, and bassist Kathlene McKee fills out the low end with aplomb. Consider your appetite whetted.
